About Maribeth Crupi
Maribeth Crupi has pursued specialized training in dance medicine for over 15 years. This includes a full dance medicine practicum through the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries in NYC, 2006. Maribeth is an active member of the International Association for Dance Medicine and Science (IADMS). Her IADMS membership assures that she is developing her treatment strategies based on the most current research and clinical wisdom of dance medicine specialists from around the world. This is further enriched by the fact that members of IADMS include dancers and dance educators as well as those in the field of science. Maribeth has been a past presenter at IADMS and is scheduled to present at the Denver Symposium in October, 2021. She also offers lectures to both medical and dance audiences on a regular basis. Maribeth is a contributing author to Prevention of Injuries in the Young Dancer.
Maribeth's level of dance medicine knowledge and extensive repertoire of treatment techniques has further been fostered in her work with Boston Ballet. Her practice is an adjunct clinic for treatment of company members.
Maribeth and her staff also offer backstage services to touring dance companies performing in the Boston area.
Maribeth appreciates dance from her background in the physics of human movement. This approach allows the dancer to achieve proper balance and weight shift using laws of gravity and principles of kinesiology to promote most efficient and proper use of muscles for dance. The emphasis is on working within the healthy limits of one’s body to avoid injury and promote the best artistry.
Understanding the movement of dance is imperative to assure safest return to dance following injury, or to correct poor movement patterns/technique that may result in injury. Without strong development of the basic movements of dance, both injury and inability to progress in artistry result. Maribeth is emphatic that forcing turnout and working outside of one’s healthy physiological limits is not only unnecessary, but likely detrimental for success in dance.
Maribeth offers informational lectures to area dance studios and ballet academies on a wide variety of topics ranging from pre-pointe preparation to dance technique as it relates to musculoskeletal issues, injury prevention and treatment. As the parent of a multi-discipline dancer through the collegiate level, Maribeth has spent over 20 years closely observing dance technique both in the studio and theater settings and understands implicitly the demands of dance at all levels of ability.
Maribeth combines her respect for holistic based treatments (She is a Level II Reiki Practitioner) with a solid orthopedic foundation from which she draws her treatment approaches. Maribeth's wide-ranging background in soft tissue and joint mobilization techniques also make her an excellent choice for patients with challenging diagnoses that have not responded fully to previous treatment approaches.
Maribeth is committed to keeping her skills current and expansive through her frequent attendance at professional symposiums and continuing education programs. In doing so, she has become proficient in a number of highly specialized treatment techniques. While the majority of treatment approaches are "hands on", the clinic is equipped with all customary electrical modalities to offer full spectrum treatments. Housing an extensive library of current physical therapy and dance medicine texts, Maribeth’s office provides the perfect environment for patients to learn fully about their areas of need. Maribeth Crupi, PT LLC is a recommended physical therapy practice of Children’s Hospital, Boston, Division of Sports Medicine.
Maribeth and her husband Carl (who built her beautiful treatment facility) have raised three children together. Their daughter, Elizabeth, was the inspiration for Maribeth’s journey into a dance medicine specialty. Maribeth enjoys taking advantage of all Boston and New England has to offer. She is a patron of the arts, and a recreational athlete who enjoys alpine skiing,, golf, ocean boating, and exploring Boston by foot. She also enjoys sewing and a challenging game of Scrabble!

Ongoing Clinical Education is a Priority!
Specialized Treatment Approaches Include:
Dry Needling
this modality uses fine filament needles inserted into muscles to facilitate healing of tissue, release of muscular tension, promote improved circulation to affected tissues, and stimulate the body’s return to homeostasis. Similarities with acupuncture include use of the same type of needle, but Dry Needling focuses on treatment of musculoskeletal disorders (as opposed to also treating visceral disorders) following principles of neuroanatomy (as opposed to a meridian system) to determine needle placement and affect results. These differences make it a distinctly different modality from acupuncture. Acupuncture is certainly a healing system which Maribeth and her staff also have great respect for. All current staff are certified in dry needling.
Spinal and Extremity Mobilization
including training in Maitland Approach and High Velocity Low Amplitude Thrust Techniques which offer effective means for restoring motion and decreasing pain. Integral to these techniques is the importance of listening to your patient to gain insight for developing the best treatment approach
Kinesiology Taping
specialized tapes which offer multiple applications from light support for postural corrections, to muscle facilitation or calming, to assisting with reduction of swelling
Australian Physiotherapy Pilates Institute (APPI) Mat Work Levels I through III
This premier brand of Pilates training in Europe and the UK is newly available in the United States. It was developed by physical therapists to assure that Pilates instruction incorporates the safest and most effective exercises with research based rationale. Special consideration is given on how to engage the deepest muscles of the core and protect the spine. It is the foundation for essentially all exercise programs at MCPT LLC.
Myofascial Release Techniques
fascia is the tissue that surrounds virtually every muscle and organ in our body. Understanding its structure and function is integral to developing a complete treatment program
Mulligan Concept
a whole body approach to joint mobilization which offers upright positions for spinal mobilization which may be advantageous to the acute patient with limited ability to tolerate lying down for treatment. It employs active participation by the patient to restore normal movement with improved joint mobility
Graston Technique
is a specialized myofascial approach which uses custom shaped steel instruments to assist with the freeing of scar tissue and fascial restrictions
